Blog Post #6 (Nonfiction Reading Response) Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy had a great impact  of destruction on many U.S. states. Thousands of people evacuated from low- lying areas. More than 60, 000 National Guard troops in nine states were ready to assist the local authorities. New York City officials announced plans to shut down all subway and regional rail lines. Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg of New York told residents to stay out of city parks. Local parks were very dangerous, especially because of the amount of tree's it had. At supply stores across the region, generators and other goods were snapped up in preparation for the possibility of extended power failures.

At a Home Depot in Yonkers, generators were sold out by 6:30 on a Saturday morning, within 30 minutes of opening. Kareem Hiland, a store employee said,  "The line for them was out the door". Experts warned that if Hurricane Sandy decreased in strength, it would remain a danger because of the unusual convergence of several weather systems.

Forecasters cautioned that the course of the storm could change, but officials from the National Hurricane Center said that it was no longer a question of if the storms would converge- but wheres and with how much force. Dr. Knabb of the National Hurricane Center said "The center of circulation is only going to be a very small part of the story. This is not just going to be a coastal event."

Utility companies were rushing to put crews in place to deal with power failures. In New Jersey, Government officials told residents of NJ to be prepared for electricity outage for a least 7-10 days.

Many people were hit very badly by Hurricane Sandy. Forecasters predicted this storm would be much worse than Hurricane Irene. Hurricane sandy reached up to $50 billion us damage. Residents from NY and NJ learned their lesson to be better prepared. After all of the damage, many people lost their homes because of flooding. Sandy brought many difficulties for people in all different states. More than 37 people lost their lives in just NYC, and up to 111 people in all affected areas. Hurricane Sandy was a very sad, and devastating hurricane, and many people are still trying to take all of this in.
