"My only love sprung from my only hate!" said Juliet
from the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, after she found
out that her love was a Montague. The Capulet’s' only enemy. The Capulets' and
Montagues' carried this grudge of hatred for a very long time. In Romeo and Juliet, Juliet changes a lot
for Romeo. Juliet changes from not being that interested into Romeo, to
committing suicide for him.
Another way Juliet changes throughout Romeo and Juliet was when she matured and starting making her own
choices. In the beginning of Romeo and
Juliet, Juliet isn't very interested into getting married at such a young
age. At the age of 13, Juliet is still pure and innocent. When
Lady Capulet mentions marriage to Juliet, she says: “It is an honor I
dream not of.” (Act 1 Scene 3 L71). When her mother tells her she wants her to
marry Paris, Juliet takes what her mother wants to consideration and says
she'll make herself love him if she had to. This is a further indication
of how Juliet is a dutiful, dependent girl, because she does what her
mother says. She respects her mother, even though she isn't even a real mother
to her, and the nurse is more of one. Once Juliet falls in love with Romeo, she
makes her own choices. For example, marrying and loving Romeo was a big choice
and decision to make, because she disregarded what her parents wanted and whom
they wanted her to marry (Paris). Making such huge decisions by herself also
shows her maturity and independence.
In the middle of Romeo and Juliet, there is more change
in her personality. She meets Romeo at the Capulet Mansion for a
party. The next day, they get married. The only people who know about
their marriage were Friar Lawrence and the nurse. That same day, Romeo kills
Tybalt and is banished from Verona. After all this happens, her dad starts
yelling at her because she will not marry Paris. This shows a change because
Juliet changes from a girl who was once shy and innocent; to a girl who starts
to not listen to what her parents want. Juliet also changes in the middle
because she disregards what her dad says and when her dad ordered her that she
would be wed to Paris on the upcoming Thursday, she said she wouldn't, and that
she didn't want to. Juliet changed because she stood up to her parents. This is
a newer version of Juliet.
In the end of the play, Juliet has already gone through so much.
Her dad is yelling at her for not wanting to marry Paris. Then, the next day,
she goes to her dad and tells him that she has done wrong to argue against him
and that she is sorry. Juliet says this, but by no means, actually means it. Juliet
takes a sleeping potion. Once Romeo sees Juliet "dead" and not
answering her, he commits suicide. When Juliet wakes up and sees he's dead, she
also kills herself. Juliet changes in many ways throughout Romeo and Juliet.
She fell in love and found someone she realized she couldn't live without. The
old Juliet would laugh of the idea of killing yourself for a man; especially a
Montague. The Juliet Romeo knows would do anything for her one and only love.
From the beginning to the end of Romeo and Juliet,
Juliet goes from obeying her parents to completely disregarding them, making
her own decisions, and becoming a independent young lady. Outside of this play,
it is possible for one's personalities to change. Juliet changes in a variety
of ways. She changed into a fearless, spoken, young lady. All of these things
she once was, changed once Juliet fell in love with Romeo. She didn't go
with her head, instead her heart. This meaning even though marrying Paris was
the right thing to do in everyone's minds, she knew in her heart that she
belonged to and loved Romeo, a Capulet or not. That is how Juliet changes
throughout the play, Romeo and Juliet.
